Twenty-five - The Coven - A Script for a Comic Book

Characters

Warlord – Astis. War weary leader of the Coven. Long blonde hair is matched by his equally long beard. Nordic in appearance and very tall.

War Leader – Enod. Greatest of all the Coven warriors. Very lean and muscular, square jawed and tight lipped with little patience for those who don’t follow orders.

Liaison – Braduro. An intelligent soldier who is placed in a position over the others with respect to negotiation and organisation; the title of quartermaster diplomat would summarise his role. He is a stocky man with thick brown curly hair and a thin beard growth that never seems either to increase in length or be shaven away.

Veteran – Prutan. The strongest of all the Coven warriors, always willing to fight, even when at a disadvantage, he harbours a desire to take over as the next War Leader. He is tall and strong but oafish, wearing a closely shorn beard and tight cropped hair.

Soldier – Fok. African in appearance, with a shaved head, lean and muscular.

Soldier – Helo. Asian in appearance, a very lean warrior, his hair is black and long and a few whiskers form a goatee on his chin.

Soldier – Chopp. European (Grecian) in appearance, with longish brown hair, he is shorter than the rest but wired like a steel coil.

Recorder – Faih. His manners are more effeminate than the others and his dress more colourful and flamboyant. His role is to fight, but his talent with words makes him the Coven’s unofficial scribe, recording each of their battles.

Rook – Doogs. A rookie marked for big things, almost a carbon copy of Enod, but shorter in stature.

PAGE ONE (four panels)

Panel 1. Nine men walk a path through the woods. Chopp leads the way, his eyes wary of everything. He is followed by Helo who walks with a smile on his face. The others are scattered in a random fashion.

NARRATION:           NINE WALK AS ONE TOWARDS THEIR DESTINY.

Panel 2. Prutan walks beside Braduro, he towers over him.

PRUTAN:                   HOW CAN WE BE SURE THIS IS THE RIGHT PATH?

BRADURO:               MANY HAVE ALREADY PASSED THIS WAY, LOOK AT THEIR TRACKS. THIS MUST BE THE WAY TO THE MEETING.

Panel 3. Flashback scene. Treat this and all the following flashback scenes as visually different, either in a different visual style or with a different colour choice. Astis stands wearily, his war uniform torn and ragged, his hands resting on a great longsword. The sword is bloodied, as are his hair, beard and face. Enod stands to his side. He is placing ammunition into his shotgun.

ASTIS:                        TWO YEARS SO WE COULD FAIL LIKE THIS.

ENOD:                        IT HAS NOT BEEN TOO BAD. WE ARE RICH AS A RESULT.

Panel 4. The flashback scene continues. Astis stands as before, Enod holds his gun to the sky so he can inspect the barrel.

ASTIS:                        WELL, RICH IN GOLD. NOT RICH IN THE WAYS WE THOUGHT.

ENOD: THAT’S THE PROBLEM, WE ALL HAD OUR OWN IDEAS OF WHAT THIS WAR WOULD BRING US, AND NOW, WE AREN’T ANY MORE ENLIGHTENED AT ITS END.

PAGE TWO (five panels)

Panel 1. Continued flashback. Astis takes hold of both of Enod’s shoulders.

ASTIS:                        THE ORACLE SAID THAT WE WOULD FIND OUR WAY THROUGH THIS WAR. OUR YOUTH HAS BEEN SPENT ON THESE BATTLEFIELDS, WHO WILL LEAD THE WAY NOW?

ENOD:                        WE WILL ASTIS, AS WE ALWAYS HAVE.

Panel 2. Back in the present Faih walks beside Astis in the forest.

FAIH:                          SIR, CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT WHERE WE ARE GOING?

ASTIS:                        JUST CLARIFYING POINTS I ASSUME.

FAIH:                          AH, YES SIR.

Panel 3. Astis and Faih continue to walk side by side.

ASTIS:                        WE ARE ATTENDING A MEETING, TO BE HELD BY NOORE, THE LEADER OF THE LARGEST GROUP OF MERCENARIES THAT FOUGHT IN THIS WAR. ONE HUNDRED DIFFERENT GROUPS WILL BE REPRESENTED. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT NOORE WANTS.

FAIH:                          WILL IT BE SAFE?

ASTIS:                        NO!

Panel 4. Flashback scene. Braduro sits behind a collapsable table in his tent, papers before him indicate he is busy. Astis stands at the tent entrance.

ASTIS:                        A WORD IF I CAN?

BRADURO:               OF COURSE SIR.

ASTIS:                        WE DECAMP TOMORROW, MAKE ALL THE NECESSARY ARRANGEMENTS.

Panel 5. Continued flashback. Close up on Braduro.

BRADURO:               ALL DONE SIR, WE COULD MOVE OUT TONIGHT IF NEEDS BE.

PAGE THREE (five panels)

Panel 1. Continued flashback. Astis scans through the papers on Braduro’s table.

ASTIS:                        I HAVE ONE MORE TASK TO ASK OF YOU.

BRADURO:               YES SIR.

ASTIS: TOMORROW NIGHT, MYSELF AND EIGHT OTHERS, YOU INCLUDED, WILL BE ATTENDING A MEETING IN THE NORTH. BOOK PASSAGE FROM THE PORT AT PACIFISUS SO THAT WE CAN CATCH UP TO THE REST OF THE ARMY AS IT MARCHES SOUTH.

Panel 2. Continued flashback. Braduro stands up as Astis leaves his tent.

BRADURO:               BUT THAT IS NORTH SIR.

ASTIS:                        IT IS, AND IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG IT IS THE LAST THING PEOPLE WILL EXPECT. MAKE THE ARRANGEMENTS, QUICKLY!!

Panel 3. Back in the present. Doogs walks beside Fok in the forest by night. Both are at ease with the world and let the moonlight fall on their faces.

FOK:                           IF THE TRUCE WASN’T IN PLACE THIS FOREST WOULD BE CRAWLING WITH MERCS WANTING TO CUT OUR THROATS.

DOOGS:                     CAN’T BLAME THEM, NOT WITH THE AMOUNT OF CORPSES WE MADE IN THIS WAR.

Panel 4. Enod sneaks up on the two of them as they continue to talk.

FOK:                           TRUE, BUT I’M GLAD WE DON’T HAVE TO FIGHT. HELL, WE’VE GOT NO WEAPONS, WE WOULDN’T LAST TOO LONG.

DOOGS:                     LET THEM RISK IT, THE TRUCE WAS CALLED BY THE ALLIANCE, IF THEY WANT TO GO TOE TO TOE WITH THE POWERS THAT BE, LET THEM GET KILLED.

Panel 5. The two are surprised when Enod speaks.

ENOD:                        THE WAY YOU TWO KEEP TALKING SOMEONE COULD SNEAK UP AND CUT YOUR THROATS BEFORE YOU KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING.

DOOGS: RELAX SIR, WE ARE THE COVEN, NO ONE IS GOING TO TAKE US ON.

ENOD:                        WELL, IF THIS TRUCE GETS LIFTED, WE ARE GOING TO BE IN ENEMY TERRITORY WITH NO WEAPONS.

PAGE FOUR (three panels)

Panel 1. Flashback scene. Astis stands before the eight men he is asking to accompany him.

ASTIS:                        I KNOW ALL OF YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURNING HOME TODAY, UNFORTUNATELY WE STILL HAVE ONE DUTY TO PERFORM. ALL OF YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FROM AMONGST THE MEN THAT MAKE UP THE COVEN. REMEMBER THAT YOU REPRESENT US IN WHAT WE MUST DO, DO NOT FAIL IN THIS TASK. IN TRUTH I BELIEVE THAT THIS MAY BE THE TRUE TASK THE ORACLE SAW US FULFILLING.

Panel 2. Back in present day. The woods open up to a huge ampitheatre, long forgotten by time and men, which is now filled to capacity. Torches light the approaches and a huge bonfire is lit on the stage area of the theatre.

Panel 3. We watch the eight men of the Coven make their way through the crowds. Here we see a variety of different mercenary groups; all the groups are differentiated by race, different colours, different uniforms. They are as different from the sun as the moon is.

PAGE FIVE (four panels)

Panel 1. Reverse the image, seen here from the stage of the ampitheatre where a hard-battled warrior stands. A huge scar still raw runs from his forehead and down his cheek. His eye is a polping mess but still functioning. His uniform is made up of brown knee-high boots, blue trousers with two red stripes down the side, a white shirt, suspenders and an open ankle length blue coat. This is Noore. His arms are raised.

NOORE:                     WELCOME.

Panel 2. Noore stands strong, his right hands by his side.

NOORE: WELCOME BROTHERS. THIS AMPITHEATRE BELONGS TO AN AGE LONG FORGOTTEN, BUT I’M SURE THAT THOSE SELF SAME MEN FACED SIMILAR DESCIONS, SIMILAR HARDSHIPS.

Panel 3. Noore stands with his arm raised, two fingers sticking into the sky.

NOORE:                     FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, WE HAVE ALL FOUGHT. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER WE FOUGHT FOR THE ALLIANCE OR THE CONFEDERATION. BUT NOW THAT THE CONFLICT IS OVER WE HAVE BEEN CAST ASIDE, WITH LITTLE THANKS, THE ROLES IN THE NEW GOVERNMENT WILL GO TO THOSE WHO DID NOT EARN THEM THROUGH BLOOD SACRIFICE AND DEATH. THE POWER HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THE UNWORTHY.

Panel 4. Cut to the eight men of the Coven. They listen intently while those around them act deleriously.

NOORE:                     LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT POWER, LOOK AROUND, EVERY MAJOR MERCENARY GROUP IS REPRESENTED HERE, AND IN TOTAL WE REPRESENT A FORCE OF OVER 200,000 MEN, DOUBLE WHAT BOTH THE ALLIANCE AND CONFEDERATION CAN PUT INTO THE FIELD.

PAGE SIX (five panels)

Panel 1. Noore stands his right hand clenched in a fist before him.

NOORE:                     THE POWER IN THIS LAND LIES WITH US, IN OUR HANDS. WE CAN MAKE ALL OUR DREAMS COME TRUE.

Panel 2. Cut to a sniper up in a tree, sights fixed on Noore.

NOORE:                     WE HAVE THE POWER.

Panel 3. Noore stands, arms outstretched.

NOORE:                     UNDER MY LEADERSHIP…

Panel 4. Noore’s chest explodes as the sniper’s bullet is fired through it.

SFX:                            BOOM.

Panel 5. Cut to Noore’s fallen body, resting in pooling blood.

ENOD:                        THAT WOULD BE ON THE TOP OF MY LIST.

Panel 3. Enod leads the way up out of the ampitheatre, Prutan right behind him.

PRUTAN:                   THIS IS GOING TO GET ROUGH.

ENOD:                        JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE IT.

Panel 4. Enod reaches the tops of the stairs, shots ring out, members of other gangs fall to the ground, shot dead.

SFX:                            BANG! BANG!

Panel 5. Enod heads back down the stairs and faces Astis.

ENOD:                        IT’S THE ALLIANCE.

PAGE EIGHT (five panels)

Panel 2. The Coven head down into the ampitheartre, Chopp leading the way.

CHOPP:                      FOLLOW ME.

Panel 3. Followers, dressed similarly to Noore, stand over his body. His second in command Kilein speaks.

KILEIN:                      WE NEED TO FIND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND MAKE THEM PAY.

Panel 4. The Coven soldiers pass by this group.

KILEIN:                      SEND OUT WORD THAT WE WILL PAY FOR ANY INFORMATION.

Panel 5. Astis is drawn to the body of the fallen Noore.

Panel 1. Astis makes a move to leave, the rest of the Coven have already moved on without him. Kilein grabs him by the arm.

Panel 2. Astis turns to Kilein, the rest of his crew surrounds him, staring with angry faces.

ASTIS:                        HE WAS A FIGHTING MAN. YOU WANT TO SEE THE WHITES OF THE EYES OF THE MAN WHO TAKES YOUR LIFE.

KILEIN:                      CAN YOU SEE MINE?

Panel 3. Kilein drives a knife upwards into Astis’s chest.

KILEIN:                      DIE FOOL!

ASTIS:                        ARGHHH!

Panel 3. The flashback continues. Same image as the last panel but closer in.

FIFTH MAN: GREAT THINGS WILL COME OF THIS WAR AND OUR INVOLVEMENT. WE CANNOT IGNORE THE ORACLE.

ASTIS:                        MAKE THE READING PUBLIC, I WILL NOT BE THE ONE TO BEAR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS COMING CONFLICT.

Panel 4. Return to present day. Kilein stands above the fallen Astis who lies contorted in his death throes, but still defiant.

KILEIN: SOMEONE BETRAYED THIS MEETING TO THE ALLIANCE TONIGHT, YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO DIE FOR THIS OUTRAGE.

ASTIS:                        THEN YOU TOO WILL SUFFER SUCH A DEATH AS MINE.

Panel 5. The Coven soldiers have arrived at the back of the stage, water drips down from above. Roots and vines reach down to them.

BRADURO:               ASTIS WOULDN’T LEAVE US BEHIND.

ENOD:                        WE HAVE TO THINK OF THE REST OF THE MEN, THEY NEED TO KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENED, OTHERWISE THEY’LL BE TAKEN UNAWARES.

DOOGS:                     WE CAN’T DO ANYTHING FOR ASTIS, FOR ALL WE KNOW HE MAY BE DEAD, BUT OUR BROTHERS NEED US.

BRADURO:               THEN WE HEAD NORTH, I’VE BOOKED PASSAGE ON A SHIP TO GET US DOWN THE COAST QUICKER.

ENOD:                        WELL, THE ALLIANCE CAN’T CONTINUE TO HOLD POWER, THEY ARE TOO CORRUPT.

ASTIS:                        WHO’S TO SAY THE CONFEDERACY WON’T BE?

ENOD: LESSER OF TWO EVILS, ISN’T THAT THE RULE OF POLITICS?

Panel 2. Continued flashback. The two continue to ride but we only see their upper bodies and the horses’ heads.

ASTIS:                        IS THAT HOW YOU VIEW MY LEADERSHIP OF THE COVEN?

ENOD: LEADERSHIP OF THE COVEN IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE LEADER AND THE PEOPLE. YOU MY FRIEND HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR IT. ONE DAY, WHEN PEOPLE ARE READY TO LISTEN TO THE ORACLE, WHEN THEIR SELFISHNESS EVAPORATES AND THEIR HEARTS ARE READY TO LISTEN, THEN THEY MAY BE READY FOR A NEW WAY OF LIFE.

Panel 3. Continued flashback. We see them both side on.

NORWOOD:              YES, JEFFRIES?

Panel 4. Jeffries stands next to Norwood.

JEFFRIES:                  IT IS DONE SIR, THE ATTACK WENT WELL, MOST OF THE MERCENARY GROUPS WERE CAPTURED OR KILLED. STAGE TWO OF THE PLAN HAS BEEN INITIATED.

NORWOOD: EXCELLENT, NOW THAT THE HEADS HAVE BEEN REMOVED WE CAN GO AFTER THE BODIES. NO MERCENARY ARMY WILL REACH THEIR HOMES AND THEN, WE CAN FINALLY FINISH OFF THE CONFEDERACY SO THAT IT WILL NEVER CHALLENGE FOR GOVERNORSHIP AGAIN.

Panel 5. Close up on Norwood.

NORWOOD:              IT WILL ALL BE MINE.
